This famous and touristy Indonesian island offers more than beautiful beaches and rice fields. Here you will be able to find some great restaurants and authentic Indonesian and Balinese dishes. During our stay in Bali we tried as many as we could and here is the list of my favourite restaurants. Bon appetite!
As a bit of an introduction to Balinese food let me tell you briefly about a few fundamentals that you should try when visiting Bali. I have not included a full list of everything that this great cuisine has to offer and for sure during your trip you will discover other delicacies.
Mie Goreng and Nasi Goreng - Nasi goreng is an Indonesian fried rice, mixed with meats or vegetables and topped with a fried egg. It’s usually served with pickles, peanut sauce, pickled vegetables and prawn crackers on the side. Nasi goreng contains fried noodles instead of rice but the same toppings.
Sate or Satay - is a Southeast Asian dish that you can find in both Malaysia and Indonesia. Basically this is skewered grilled meat, served with a sauce.
Nasi campur – this is the perfect mix of Indonesian goodies. Nasi campur includes rice, sate lilit (fish or pork meat served on lemongrass sticks), tempeh, peanuts, veggies and breadcrumbed chicken.
In terms of restaurants, for us it is always important to get out of the hotel and try new places with a nice atmosphere and of course great food. So these are the places that we explored and really liked!
Fat chow temple hill (Jimbaran) -they serve typical Balinese food and southeast Asian that was really good. Here we tried our first nasu campur and it was great! If you go during the day, the view from the terrace is fantastic!
The place with no name (Uluwatu) – this restaurant quite close to the Uluwatu temple has a menu serving only vegetables and fish cooked in an international way with Balinese spices. I would recommend to try one of their original fish creations!
Opia (Jimbaran) – this is the fanciest restaurant from the list however in my personal opinion it is worth it for one special night or occasion. We went there for dinner. The place is absolutely stunning with a garden and a great terrace. The food has an international inspiration and we really enjoyed it. The only small downside is that the prices are more similar to European standards than Balinese standards.
Balique (Jimbaran) – the place is just beautiful and I am 100% sure that instagramers would love the atmosphere. In terms of food you can also choose between an international menu and a Balinese menu. We chose the Balinese option and it was really nice!
Hujan Locale (Ubud) – this stylish restaurant offers a contemporary twist on traditional Indonesian cuisine. It's a great spot for dinner and cocktails.
Craftsman (Ubud) – amazing place for lunch, coffee and cake (make sure you order cake). The décor and atmosphere are great and it will make you feel like home.
