Best things to do in Milos

Updated: Jun 6

I can ensure you that if you visit Milos, you will want to go back. This island has stolen my heart and I cannot wait to go back. The colours of the houses, the sea and the hills are just beautiful and not only that but there are also a lot of things to do. I have put together a list with the best 5 things to do so you can also fall in love with this great island.

1. Beaches

Milos is particularly famous for its beaches. The landscapes surrounding the beaches are unique and at the same time completely different, the rock formations and turquoise waters provide a perfect scenery to spend a day on the sea. If you are in Milos you need to try to visit as many beaches as possible and there are so many options that for sure you will find something for all the tastes. Which ones you shouldn’t miss:

  • Firopotamos: the beach is inside a small bay where many fishermen live and fish. It is a very cute beach and for me my favourite! It was not crowded at all and it was great to relax.

  • Sarakiniko beach: this beach is the most particular one of Milos. It is the most photographed spot of the island and is also considered as one of the most beautiful Greek beaches. Its particular landscape is very impressive and unforgettable: long horizontal rocks bent over the sea; those rocks are eroded by time and salt water and have large and small hollows all over them. The entire landscape formed by the volcanic rocks doesn't show any signs of vegetation and is coloured entirely in a bright white, which makes an interesting contrast with the deep blue and turquoise of the surrounding waters. This amazing scenery gives one the impression of standing on the surface of the moon.

  • Papafragas Caves: to get here is almost impossible regardless of what you have seen on social media, the area is surrounded by a massive fence and danger signs... Instead, what you can do is to go to nearby Alogomandra beach which also has a beautiful cave.

  • Pollonia: a charming fishing village, built around a pretty inlet. The church of the village, Agia Paraskevi, stands on a small peninsula, above Pollonia, and is visible from every part of the village. It has a beach of very easy access so perfect for families. Also, a very good spot to have a drink while overlooking the beach.

  • Fyriplaka Beach: situated on the southern side of the island between the beaches of Provatas in the west and Tsigrado in the east. It is a very nice sandy beach, with a bar and sunbeds. The best thing is that is very well protected from the wind, so a good option for a windy day.

  • Thiorichia beach: this is where the old sulphur mine of the island is located that ceased to operate in the 1960’s. The little wagons and rails from the side of the mountain to the small port, the stone buildings and the rusty tools will take you back to another era.

  • Plathiena: a lovely beach on the northern side of Milos which is very close to Plaka. A bit secluded and not very well-known so it provides a nice place to relax.

2. Visit the fisherman towns

One of the most picturesque things to do in Milos is to visit the fisherman towns that look like beautiful postcards! Which ones you shouldn’t miss:

  • Klima: just below the Ancient Theatre. Klima is absolutely breathtaking, directly in the sea the colourful houses are very picturesque and the couple of shops here are very cute. You can stop here for a drink or to have lunch at “Astakas”.

  • Mandrakia: a very nice village to visit and have lunch by the sea. You have to go to the only restaurant there “Medusa” – they are specialists in grilled food and both meat and fish were delicious.

  • Plaka: this is not a fisherman town but still is a very beautiful town with narrow streets perfect to have a walk around and enjoy the cute shops and nice tavernas.

  • Pollonia: aside from having a very convenient beach, Pollonia used to be a small fishing village which has been developed into something of a tourist town. It has a small ferry port running 30-minute services to neighbouring Kimolos Island.

3. Watch the sunset

It seems that nowadays a holiday is not a holiday without watching the sunset. There are 3 places particularly famous to watch the sunset from:

  • Tripiti: located just south of Plaka is basically a suburb of the larger town but with a different atmosphere, providing a quiet, peaceful getaway that's great for couples. The village's hilltop location, close to the coast and facing west, makes it a fantastic spot to enjoy a beautiful sunset.

  • Klima: book a table in advance at “Astakas” restaurant around the sunset time, you can enjoy a delicious meal while watching a romantic sunset at the most picturesque town of the island, what else can you ask for?

  • Castle of Plaka: at the top of Plaka hill you will find the small church of Panagia, built at the walls of the Venetian historical castle, with an amazing 360 view over the island and the sea. There are quite a few stairs to go up the castle passing through the village of Plaka, so not many choose to make the effort, but the view is really rewarding.

4. Enjoy the greek gastronomy

There are so many nice places to eat in Milos… for me the best part was eating with a gorgeous view. Many of the terraces are looking at the sea and this gives you a great feeling of calm and relaxation that automatically makes you feel like you are on a proper summer holiday. Obviously, given that Milos is an island the fish is super nice so make sure you try it every time that you have a chance! Where you should go:

  • “Diporto”: located in Plaka on one of the cute narrow streets. This is a traditional Greek tavern, the small plates to share are very nice, especially the vegetables. For mains the moussaka is really good as well. Super good price also and even though it’s busy, it’s relatively easy to get a table.

  • “Avli”: also a good option to have dinner in Plaka but always has a massive queue and you cannot book in advance.

  • “Nostos”: this restaurant in Adamantas is a very good option to try the great seafood and fish of the island. The location is very nice and the fish very good as well, try the fish of the day! This is the most expensive restaurant that we went to but still cheap if you compare it to UK prices.

  • “O!Hamos!”: prepare to wait but it will be worth it! This is one of the most famous restaurants of Adamantas and the queue is usually 30 to 45 minutes. Traditional Greek and simple dishes that will leave you impressed.

  • “Spirtoni": if you feel like having a souvlaki this is the place to go. The food was really good, the spot beautiful and the price great, a very good relaxing option for lunch.

  • “Medusa”: they are specialists in grilled food and both meat and fish were delicious. The grilled squid was fantastic, the view was beautiful and the price super good! You definitely have to try it.

5. Boat day trip

This is a very popular activity to do when visiting Milos and therefore there are many options available. For me the main attractive was to be able to visit few beaches specially from the south part of the island in a short period of time. When booking your boat trip make sure that they visit Kleftiko and Tsigrado. Two of the most unaccessible beaches by foot or car. Some of the options that you have regarding the Boat day trip:

  • A full day or half day with lunch and snorkelling: the most important thing before booking this option is to check how many people is going to be in the boat. We saw some cruises with about 60 people on that I think is crazy and overcrowded. There are other options that only take between 10 or 20 people and this is much more sensible idea. These cruises usually depart from Adamantas and you can book it directly at the port or online using the Viator website.

  • The other alternative is to get a small private boat: given that these boats are smaller, you have to rent them directly on a beach on the south of the island. You have the option to sail the boat by yourself or you can hire someone to take charge of the boat, in my opinion the later is a better idea.
