Canterbury Weekend Escape

Updated: Mar 7, 2021

Best time to go: Autumn is a great time to visit as the city is surrounded by trees and nice gardens so the colours are just amazing! However… I might be a bit biased as I also visited in autumn.

General Advice: This is a great day trip or a short two day trip so you don’t need much time, which it is perfect for a weekend escape. The best part is that it is just 45 mins by train from London!

The recommended hotel is "The Hugo Canterbury", very well located, chic and a very good price. "ABode Canterbury" is a fantastic alternative if the first one is not available.

Day 1

It is great how easy it is to get from one place to the next so you can walk everywhere! You might not need 2 days to visit the whole city if you are an active person in case you want to make your trip shorter. For the first day the suggested plan is as follows:

  • Westgate Tower - a medieval gatehouse that is 60-foot high and the largest surviving city gate in England.

  • Westgate garden – these gardens beside the River Stour have a 200 year-old plane tree and a Victorian Tower House. I really enjoyed this area and the gardens are bigger than expected so take your time to walk around and enjoy the views.

  • River tour – you can take a guided boat tour on the river that focuses on historic buildings, monuments and literary sites.

  • The Beany House of Art & Knowledge - the central museum, library and art gallery of the city.

Recommended restaurant to have dinner is "Café du Soleil", a great romantic Mediterranean restaurant with very nice food and atmosphere.

Day 2

For the second day the suggested plan is as follows:

  • Canterbury Cathedral - one of the oldest and most famous Christian structures in England. It is the cathedral of the Archbishop of Canterbury, leader of the Church of England and symbolic leader of the worldwide Anglican Communion. It is a very impressive and massive building, I would definitely recommend to visit the inside it is completely worth it. It will take a bit more than one hour to do the full visit.

  • St Augustine's Abbey - it was a Benedictine monastery founded in 598 and functioned as a monastery until 1538 during the English Reformation.

  • St Martin´s Church

I would really recommend you to have lunch at "Canterbury Corner House", the beef Wellington was absolutely incredible…. So good!!! It is so good that you have to order it 48 hr in advance so don’t forget!
