Best time to go: in Cape Town the weather is nice all year long! It is true that May to September can be more stormy and rainy so take that into account when booking your trip.
General advice: Rent a car! We actually felt very safe driving and I think we really enjoyed the trip thanks to having the independence of driving around. We still were cautious and we didn’t drive during the night. We used to leave the car parked at the hotel car park at sunset and take Ubers to go for dinner. Also we wanted to enjoy dinner trying the different wonderful wines so Uber was the right decision.
As always is good idea to buy a data phone card specially taking into account that you will need to use only maps to get around.
Where to stay: I do not recommend staying in the centre of Cape town. Staying a bit outside the city centre is much more pleasant.
We stayed in Green point area which is very well located and close to many nice restaurants. Our recommended hotel is "Cape Diem Lodge".
Another option is to stay at Camps Bay, this is slightly further from the centre of Cape Town but it is a very nice beach area. Our recommended hotel is "Houghton View Guest House".
Day 1: Cape Town city centre
We arrived very early in the morning to Cape Town. We went directly to the hotel and rested until lunch time. We booked the hotel from the night before as we wanted to make sure that we could use the room to check in and rest immediately at upon our arrival. After lunch we visited the main attractions of Cape Town city centre, we drove to the city centre and parked there and then walked down
• Long Street, shopping area with some interesting African shops
• Company's Garden, very nice garden/ park in the city centre
• Green market square, super good place to buy all your souvenirs!
• District six museum, museum about the Apartheid
That night we went for dinner to the waterfront, this is a very touristic area and not commonly visited by locals but we still had a very nice fish and seafood at Baia restaurant. Waterfront area is also a nice walking area.
Day 2: Stellenbosch, Boulders Beach and Cape of Good Hope
We drove to Stellenbosch (50 min drive) and went for a wine tasting at Tokara Vineyard. The vineyard is absolutely beautiful and the scenery is just spectacular. We tried the"Cellar Tour and tasting of 8 products" option for R250pp that takes around 2 hours to do the full experience. Of course we bought some wine after to take back home! I fully recommend the place, the wine tasting and full experience!
After that we drove to Boulders Beach (1.20 min drive from Tokara) to see the penguins! The drive along the coast is very pretty and it was great to see all of those penguins walking around!
Then we drove to the Cape of Good Hope (40 min from drive from Boulders beach). There are few spots to take pictures and you can see the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean from different points.
That night we went for dinner to "The Hussar Grill MouillePoint" for a fantastic steak!
Day 3: Hermanus and Camps Bay
We went to Hermanus to do a boat trip to watch whales. We book the boat trip with Southern Right Charters. The price per person is R900. They depart daily at 09h00; 12h00 and 15h00 from the New Harbour in Hermanus. The trip normally averages at about 2 hours.
Hermanus is located 1.45 min drive from Cape Town so we booked the boat trip at 12. After the whales watching we went to Hermanus town centre to the local market for a nice walk.
After that we decided to go directly to Camps Bay (1.45 min driving from Hermanus). We watched the sunset from a very nice terrace beachfront while having a wine. We had a very nice seafood dinner at Codfather Seafood.
Day 4: Table Mountain and Bo – Kaap
We went to Table Mountain in the morning and spent around 1.30 min there. It is a very nice high up point on top of a mountain with amazing views over the city.
After Table Mountain, we went to Bo – Kaap for a walk, this area is known for the colourful houses around the neighbourhood. We discovered many nice art galleries and design shops here.
We came back to the city centre for lunch at "Villa 47" and the last minute shops at the Green market square.
That night we took a direct flight to Mauritius with Air Mauritius.
Day 5 to 9: Mauritius
We spent the last 4 days relaxing in Mauritius in a wonderful hotel "The St. Regis Mauritius Resort".
We did few activities facilitated by the hotel. Our favourite, with no doubt, was the full day catamaran sailing where we went to a beautiful island and had the opportunity to watch dolphins!
We also visited the Port Louis Market.
The food was absolutely fantastic and the service at the hotel was wonderful! Only bad point was how outrageously expensive the alcohol was!
Do you have more days? What about extending your trip with a safari in South Africa?
