When you start planning your trip to Costa Rica the first thing that you are going to struggle with is how to decide which national parks to visit.
Obviously it is also important to consider the weather. The rainy season, also known as the green season, runs from mid-May through to November. But it is also during this time, from July to October, when you can see the Green Turtles nest along the beaches of Tortuguero National Park. These details can be important when deciding which parks to visit.
There are 3 main things to take into account when planning your trip:
1. Which kind of holiday would you like to do? Is your main objective exploring the beautiful beaches, trying to see as many animals as possible, doing all the cool hikes, or maybe it’s a little bit of everything?
2. How far are you wiling to travel? Even though the country is not that big, some of the roads are in a really bad state so you will have to take this into account when planning the trip. Another point to consider is whether you want to focus on the pacific side or the Caribbean side of Costa Rica as in that case you might have to take internal flights.
3. How many days do you have? For a trip of 7 or 8 days you will only have time to do around 3 national parks but as per the point above these cannot be very far from each other.
If you want to explore the beautiful beaches I would recommend to visit: Parque Nacional Manuel Antonio, Parque Nacional Marino Ballena and Corcovado.
If you want to hike: for hiking, I would recommend Monteverde, Arenal and Volcan Tenorio.
If you want to see animals: Tortuguero, Corcovado and Manuel Antonio
If you want to focus on the Caribbean side only: Tortuguero and Parque Nacional Cahuita.
If you want a bit of everything and do not have much time: if you would like to hike, see animals and enjoy the beaches then choose Arenal, Volcan Tenorio, Monteverde and Manuel Antonio.
Now that you have all the basic information… are you ready to choose your perfect Costa Rica itinerary?
