Malaysia in 8 days

Updated: Mar 7, 2021

Best time to go: Kuala Lumpur is very hot and humid all year round so it doesn’t make too much of a difference at which time you visit. However, if you are travelling to the southwest part of Malaysia it is better to go from December to April, andIf you are travelling to the northwest area then August and September are the best months to go. We went in March and Kuala Lumpur was extremely hot but we found the rest of the country to be equivalent to a very nice European summer temperature.

General advice: During this trip we booked the transfers from one place to the next in the different hotels that we were staying in, and I wouldn’t recommend this approach. It ended up being very expensive and some of the drivers were quite unprofessional. In my opinion, the roads (outside Kuala Lumpur) are very well maintained, not particularly busy and very easy to drive around, so if I came back here I would definitely rent a car.

Day 1: Kuala Lumpur

We arrived to Kuala Lumpur in the afternoon. To go from the airport to the hotel we took one of the fixed price taxis that you can arrange before exiting the terminal building.

We had tickets (need to book at least 4 days in advance) to go to the Petronas Twin Towers (Skybridge & Observation Deck). After that we went for a dinner in a very nice Malaysian restaurant "Bijan Bar & Restaurant", we really enjoyed the food.

Hotel: "Shangri-La Hotel". The hotel was very nice, in a very good location and the breakfast was fantastic.

Day 2: Kuala Lumpur

A day dedicated to exploring the city.

  • First thing in the morning we went to Batu Caves (by Uber) as this is the farthest sightseeing from the city centre. This site is a Hindu temple built inside a cave, it is an incredible and unique place. This is one of the highlights of KL and I would highly recommend visiting. Entry is free.

  • After that, we came back to the city centre to visit the National Mosque. It takes 25 mins by underground from Batu Caves station to Kuala Lumpur station (7 stops) and is a direct line. The visit to the National Mosque is quite quick and the entry is free.

  • From the National Mosque we walked (12 min) to Merdeka Square. Merdeka square is surrounded by notable buildings of historical interest.

  • Quite close to this is the Central Market and Chinatown (4 mins walking). The central market is a very good place to buy souvenirs and has many nice shops.

Afterwards we came back to the hotel and relaxed by the swimming pool until sunset.

We decided to go to "Skybar – at Traders Hotel Kuala Lumpur" to see the sunset. This is an incredible bar where you can you can enjoy great views of the Petronas Twin Towers.

From the Skybar we went for dinner at "Fuego Restaurant",located at a beautiful rooftop with a very nice atmosphere, however the food was not as good as expected.

Day 3: Cameron Highlands

We woke up early to drive to the Cameron Highlands (3.5 hours), where you can find one of the most famous tea plantations in Malaysia. We checked in at the hotel and visited the famous BOH Tea Plantation. That night we had dinner at the hotel.

Hotel: "Cameron Highlands Resort"

Day 4: Taman Negara

Early drive from Cameron Highlands to Taman Negara (4 hours). We arrived at the hotel and after checking in we organised 2 activities with the hotel.

• A walk to visit the world’s longest canopy walkway. This suspension bridge is 530 metres long and 40 metres above ground level, it is one of the main attractions.

• Canoeing to explore the river and surroundings, this was an incredible and beautiful experience.

Hotel: "Mutiara Taman Negara Resort " - the only resort inside the national park.

Day 5: Kuala Dungun

Early morning drive to get to our final beach stop (4 hours). Most people go to Perhentian Island to go to the beach. We didn’t go to the island because we heard that it is quite crowded and touristy with big resorts, and we are not big fans of that kind of hotel. It also takes around 7 hours from Taman Negara. Instead we went to a beach boutique hotel near Kuala Dungun.

Hotel: " Tanjong Jara Resort". The hotel was just amazing! It is one of the best hotels that I have ever been in, I would definitely come back. The surrounding garden and beach are just beautiful, and it was so peaceful, an absolute pleasure.

Day 6: Kuala Dungun

We booked one of the hotel's activities to spend the day at Tenggol Island snorkelling and having a BBQ on the beach. The experience was great, there were only four people from the hotel (including us) and they took us on a private boat to the island. This was all for us with an instructor who showed us the best parts of the island. I must say I have never seen such incredible sea life before! It was a fantastic day.

Day 7: Kuala Dungun

We spent the morning relaxing at the beach. After lunch we drove for one hour to Kuala Terengganu airport to take a flight to Kuala Lumpur, this was just one hour with AirAsia. We preferred to take a flight as the drive from the hotel to the airport is around 5 hours. This was the end of the trip.

Do you have more days? I would suggest to visit Langkawi island and live the Skybridge cable car experience, or visit Borneo island and meet the orangutans!
