Mallorca is an island that has it all… from impressive beaches, to incredible mountains and amazing cuisine. Ideally you would be able to spend more than a weekend in Mallorca to explore it all, however, if you are going just for a weekend you might need some tips to make the best out of 48 hours on the island.
When to go: May, June and September are the best months. Mallorca is such a popular destination that during July and August it gets extremely crowded. During the months of May and September temperatures are milder than during the peak of the summer as well, so another reason to avoid those months.
Where to stay: this a tricky question… the island is very big and offers all kind of accommodations for all kind of travellers, however if you are coming just for a weekend I would recommend to stay in Palma as it is quite close to the airport and you will also have access to all type of shops and restaurants, apart from the fact that Palma is also a beautiful city.
We stayed at “Innside Palma Center” and we were very happy with the hotel. The swimming pool on the rooftop was great and the rooms very spacious and modern.
Tip: avoid staying near the port and Santa Catalina area as these are full of clubs and pubs and the atmosphere is definitely not great. The area of “Centro” closer to the cathedral, it is much nicer in my view. Also try to book a hotel with swimming pool if possible!
General advice: the most important thing of all is… Rent a car!!! I would say that this is actually fundamental… if possible try to book it far in advance as the prices for rental cars in the Balearic Islands are quite high. You can either rent the car directly at the airport or with the help of your hotel. We booked with the hotel just for one day to avoid paying for parking and the prices were very competitive.
Day 1: South east beaches
To be honest there are so many options in terms of areas and beaches to go to… however, note that the island is really big so there are many towns ad beaches that can be more than a one hour drive to get there! That is why we opted to go to the south east of the island.
Cala Pi: we started the day at Cala Pi, which is a 40 min drive from Palma. As we got there early (around 11.30) it was really easy to park on the street, but we saw that there was a public car park there as well. The beach is protected by mountains on both sides and even though it was small, it was a sandy beach with incredibly clear sea.
After spending a couple of hours here we went to have lunch at “Restaurante Miguel”, specialising in paellas and grilled fish.
Platja des Trenc: after lunch we drove to Des Trenc beach, which is a 30 min drive from Cala Pi. There is a parking on the beach that costs 7 euros for the whole day. This is a protected beach with white sand, dunes at the back and beautiful turquoise waters. The beach is quite long so walk a bit to be in a more chilled area instead of at the beginning where it's very crowded.
S’Almonia and Calo del Moro: these small beaches or calas are just 25 min driving from Des Trenc, however these are probably 2 of the most famous beaches of Mallorca… thanks to Instagram they have become basically the places to be and as they are really small, you are either there at 7 am or you will not find space. However, what we did is to get there around 6pm just to check them out and it was a great decision! Basically by that time everyone was leaving so it didn’t feel very crowded and we managed to find a parking space at Cami de Cala Llombards, which is around a 15 min walk from the beaches. The access to the beaches is not easy at all so going with kids is for sure a bad idea, also I recommend to wear trainers to walk around the rocks. First follow all the signs to S’Almonia and you can check this one out, once there follow the signs to a path that says private property and following that path you will arrive at Calo del Moro. I must say that the turquoise colours of the sea here were spectacular!
At the end the drive back to Palma was one hour.
After then we went for dinner to “Colmado Hispania - Tapas Bar”, a very nice bar in a not so touristy area. In that street you will also find other nice places to go for a chilled drink like “Chapeau 1987”.

Day 2: Palma center
As mentioned before, the centre of Palma is completely worth it and you shouldn’t miss it.
The most impressive thing to visit is the cathedral built in 1229 in the bay overlooking the sea. This impressive gothic church is very impactful due to the dimensions. The best view of the cathedral is from the “parque del mar” from the salt water lake.
The second best thing to do is to get lost around the beautiful streets of the city centre. Walk towards Placa de Cort and Placa Major and from there to La Rambla, checking out all the nice shops and narrow streets around the area.
From here, to end the day on a high note, come back to the hotel to chill in the swimming pool until that sad moment when you have to make your way to the airport.
