Best time to go: June or September are the best months to go. July and August get very crowded with tourists but at the same time you want to go when you know that the weather is going to be nice to enjoy the coast and the terraces. General Advice: You can adapt this trip very easily to the days that you have or you would like to spend there. You can either go to both Split and Hvar or just to one of them, another option is to do just a day boat trip to Hvar. My personal recommendation is to visit both places as they are both beautiful and spend 2 nights in each place. Even though the coast is nice, I would not recommend this trip to go to the beach. The beaches in this area are small and full of pebbles so the best option is to rent a boat to enjoy the wonderful turquoise waters and have a swim. Day 1: Split Arrival The recommended hotel in Split is " Evala luxury rooms with pool and garden", a charming hotel with a nice swimming pool and very well located at the city centre. You can have a nice walk around the Riva (the split waterfront) admiring views of the harbour and the glimmering Adriatic Sea. Afterwards you can go for dinner to "Zoi", a restaurant with a beautiful panoramic terrace on the top floor overlooking the port.

Day2: Split Old Town Split is a very easy city to walk around, on the first day you can start visiting the most touristic parts of the city and walk the full itinerary:

  • Diocletian's Palace - an ancient palace built for the Roman emperor Diocletian in the fourth century AD, which today forms about half of the old town of Split. There are four different gates that lead to the entrance of this palace area. Bronze, Silver, Gold and Iron gates.

  • The Cellars of Diocletian's Palace - or the "basement halls" that once held up the private apartments of Emperor Diocletian and represent one of the best preserved ancient complexes of their kind in the world.

  • Temple of Jupiter - a temple dedicated to the Ancient Roman god Jupiter. It is located in the western part of Diocletian's Palace near the Peristyle, the central square of the imperial complex.

  • Let Me Pass (Pusti me da prodjem) Street - one of the narrowest streets in the world. It's just wide enough to allow one grown person to pass at a time, hence the name.

  • Prokurative Square - a large, open square surrounded on three sides by a collection of elaborate neo-Renaissance buildings. The square opens up to a lovely view of the harbour. Construction of the Prokurative started during the latter half of the 19th century, the buildings are inspired by the architecture of the same period in Venice.

  • Pjaca Square - dating from the 15th century, the People’s Square features many interesting Renaissance, Venetian, and Gothic buildings built by the nobility. You can also find here the City Clock, unique by having 24 digits instead of 12.

Recommended dinner at " Sug Restaurant", a Mediterranean restaurant serving typical Croatian food and very nice Seafood.

Day 3: Split to Hvar This is the day to take the ferry to Hvar, make sure you book the tickets in advance as it is not that easy to get a spot. There are 3 companies serving this route: Kapetan Luka, Jadrolinija and Krilo Shipping Company. In the high season there are 16 journeys per day but in the low season there are only 2 journeys per day. Journey time is between 55 minutes and 2 hours 05 minutes depending on the route so make sure you check that as well. Recommended places to stay are "Palace Elisabeth, Hvar Heritage Hotel", a very nice hotel which is extremely well located, or "Adriana Hvar Spa Hotel". Go for dinner to "San Marco Restaurant", which is actually at Palace Elisabeth rooftop terrace so you can have a wonderful dinner overlooking the port and the Adriatic sea.

Day 4: Hvar Boat excursion The perfect plan is to spend the day doing a boat excursion. If you can get a private boat it would be much nicer, however if your budget doesn’t allow it make sure you check how many people you are going to share the boat with. I would try to get a boat with a maximum of 10 people. In some of the boat excursions the food is included during the day, in our case we were very lucky and we were able to enjoy an amazing seafood lunch cooked on the boat. Recommended dinner at "Konoba Bunar", located in one of the small streets in Hvar hilltop fortress, a beautiful terrace with delicious Mediterranean food and seafood. Try one of the amazing Croatian white wines!
